According to Gartner, more than 119 million consumers around the world bought a tablet PC or other tablet device in 2012. That's a 98 percent increase from 2011. What's more: the number of tablet users is expected to grow by at least 300 percent by the end of 2016. Clearly, tablet use is on the rise around the globe. It's not surprising. Tablet PCs make the functions of a desktop computer portable, so that sales people, contractors and other business men and women who travel can easily take the full power of their computers as well as their data on the road with them--to customers, to conferences and to do work outside of the office.

What are tablet PCs?

Tablet PCs are mobile devices that combine the functions of a laptop computer, a smartphone and a portable tablet. Such devices have a flip-able touch screen that can be used as the display screen of a laptop-style computer with a full-size key board, but can be removed and used independently. When you're not using the keyboard, the device folds into a tablet. When the device isn't in use, the entire tablet flips over to create a durable, yet lightweight, shell.
Tablet PCs connect to the Internet using wireless technology, so as long as you're within range of a mobile tower, you can access the Internet. You don't have to worry about whether your client or your hotel has its own wireless network or router. With a tablet PC, if you can make a mobile call, you can check email, create a proposal and/or access your documents, images and other data. Tablet PCs also have Bluetooth capability, so you can easily connect to a printer or other peripheral device.
Advantages to using tablet PCs for business

It's not an exaggeration to say that tablet PCs are revolutionizing the way we do business. These portable devices bring the power of the Internet and your personal computer to all but the most remote locations. Just a few advantages to using a tablet PC for business include:

Portability. Tablet PCs are lightweight and fold down to less than a thickness of less than 20 millimetres. With a tablet PC, there's no more lugging a bulky and heavy laptop around on sales calls or through airport security. Most tablet PCs weigh less than two kilograms and fit easily in a carry-on bag. You don't even have to use one of your allowed carry-on bags at the airport for your computer.

Professional presentations. With a tablet PC, you can create professional business presentations with full-screen images that potential customers can easily view. The lightweight, detachable screen makes it easy for committee members to pass the screen around, rather than straining their eyes to see a central laptop display during a presentation.

Durability. Even though tablet PCs are lightweight and easy to handle, that doesn't mean they are fragile. Most models are made with aluminum shells and use bonded, shatter-resistant glass and spill-resistant keyboards.

Cloud storage. The majority of tablet PCs include cloud storage for your documents, presentations, images and other documents. This means you can access your data from any Internet-enabled device. Plus, you don't have to worry about losing your sensitive data and documents you've worked diligently to create if your tablet PC is lost or stolen. Your data is safe and secure in the cloud. Cloud storage also protects data from access by unauthorized users.

Affordability. Although the cost of a tablet PC is somewhat higher than a typical desk top computer, the device appears more affordable when you consider it functions as a laptop, desktop and mobile device all in one package.

Can't type; no problem. Many of us grew up during the age when typing was just for students planning a secretarial or other office career. If you skipped typing class in school, don't worry. Most of a tablet PC's functions can be accessed via a touch screen. You don't have to be frustrated by your lack of typing acumen.

Longer battery life. Tablet PCs have longer-lasting batteries than smaller hand-held devices or smartphones. That means you don't have to worry about your screen going dark in the middle of your presentation.

It's no wonder that tablet PCs are becoming increasingly popular in countries all around the globe. These smart, portable and convenient devices make it possible to carry the functions of a PC around with you wherever you need to go. Tablet PCs combine function, portability and style. What could be better than that?
