This is the second BlackBerry phone that runs on the BlackBerry 10 OS next to the previously released BlackBerry Z10. While the Z10 is fully touchscreen, BB has decided to put the classic QWERTY keyboard on the Q10. It may not look as classy and elegant as the Z10, the Q10 still holds its own on the high-end Smartphone market.

The shape of the Q10 resembles that of the BB Bold. It has a small screen at just 3.1” to make way for the four-row keyboard. The back of the device has a ‘woven glass’ pattern which supposedly makes it easier to hold. It brings back the classic BB phone look that die-hard BB users have grown to love.

It measures 119.6 x 66.8 x 10.35mm and weighs just 139g. There should be no problem using and/or carrying this phone around because it’s neither big nor heavy. It also wouldn’t be a problem placing the device in most pockets.

The Q10 has a 3.1” Super AMOLED screen with a 720 x 720 pixels resolution and pixel density of 330ppi. With the small screen size aside, the display on this device is pretty impressive - texts and icons are crisp, color reproduction is solid and viewing angles are good. However, because of the screen size, it’s not that convenient to stream and watch videos.

The camera on the rear of this device is an 8MP shooter with 5x digital zoom, autofocus, and 1080p video recording. It has that ‘Time Shift’ mode where you can take multiple shots then pick out whatever you think are nice then you can stitch together a single photo just the way you want it to look like. The front camera is a 2MP shooter with 3x digital zoom and 720p HD video recording. It may not have wide angles to fit the entire family on the screen when video chatting, but you’re going to get some not-so-washed-up images. This makes it applicable for video calling and other VoIP services and applications from providers like RingCentral.

Powering the Q10 is a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor clocked at 1.5GHZ and paired with a very generous 2GB of RAM. Internal memory is at 16GB and expandable up to 64GB via the MicroSD card. The device runs on the same OS as the Z10 which is the BlackBerry 10. Performance-wise, the Q10 us snappy and highly responsive although the new OS still has much room for improvement.

Underneath the rear cover is a 2,100mAh removable battery. It should last through a whole day just fine since the fast processor is not power-hungry, it has a small screen and the fact that it’s removable helps it last longer.

With the BB10 OS, users can multi-task while on a video chat or call. But as aforementioned, the new OS still has a lot of room to grow, including the fact that some popular third-party apps are still not accessible such as Instragram.

Other features of the Q10 include connectivity through WiFi, Bluetooth, MicroUSB, NFC, and LTE. It has numerous sensors namely Acceloremeter, Magnetometer, Proximity, Gyroscope, and Ambient Light Sensor. Also included are A-GPS, Autonomous, and Simultaneous GPS.

Touchscreen may be dominating the Smartphone market today especially on the high-end portion of it but there’s still a large amount of Smartphone users who like QWERTY keyboards and when we talk about QWERTY keyboards, BlackBerry belongs to the higher echelon in that area.
